Subject: [TI] 2017 Buffalo Reunion

I want to say thank you to Tom Corso and Ann Catalano for organizing our 
reunion in Buffalo.? It was a wonderful weekend. The restaurant choices 
were excellent.

Thursday night we went to Como's in Niagara Falls NY.? There were 12 of 
us for dinner.? Afterward, we sat in the breakfast area at the hotel and 
talked.

Friday, Tom, Lynn and I went to the Buffalo library were we were able to 
get a few things researched.? Others in the group went other places.? 
Friday night we went to the Anchor Bar where the original Buffalo wings 
were created.?? There were 20 of us for dinner and then we went back to 
the hotel and talked in the breakfast area for awhile.

Saturday we held our annual meeting /research/compare our charts day and 
a few new connections were made among those who were present.? Many new 
faces at the reunion.? Ray and Tony took a side trip to the Jello Museum 
in Leroy NY and learned all about the history of Jello.

Saturday evening we went to Chef's for dinner.? The food was excellent 
and we all wore our Chef's bibs at dinner.? Later we returned to the 
hotel to spend more time chatting at the hotel.

This morning at breakfast, it was a bit nostalgic with everyone wanting 
to keep in touch with each other and all of us not quite ready to 
leave.? It is always great seeing the familiar faces and meeting new 
ones each year.

As I have been telling everybody that talks to me about the reunion in 
Chicago and about Termini Imerese. I have said I have big plans.

Last night I sat down with a official from Termini Imerese. There are a 
few in Chicago for the Columbus parade. They will be participating in 
the parade with the sister city of Elk Grove Village. With big things to 
come.

With that being said for the 2018 reunion I am thinking to have it the 
Thursday's to Saturday the 4 the to the 6th of October. the weekend of 
Columbus Day on the 8th.? The reason for that is the Mayor of Termini 
Imerese and Many other officials will be in Chicago for the Parade. With 
meeting last night they would like to be part of our reunion. I have 
another meeting with the president of the organization for the sister 
city Elk Grove Village. Mr. Gullo. To have them part of our reunion next 
year. They have 2 floats that are in the Parade that who ever wants to 
stay until Monday for the parade can participate.

I am going to be in Termini Imerese the 19 to the 22 of this month. I 
did have a meeting put together about things to help us on researching 
and other things. But after last night I will be having another meeting 
with more officials in TI to work with then hand in hand in different 
things. Big things and projects in the works.

I am working hard to open many doors for us in TI with Researching 
Visiting and so much more.

So please comment below to give me your opinion on changing the date

As I said to Scott last night when we spoke on the phone, I normally 
would not change the time period for the reunion because people know to 
expect it to be that last weekend in September. But I believe that 
changing it to this the time around the Columbus Day weekend and the TI 
delegation being in Elk Grove Village in 2018 would be to our benefit. 
Hopefully, if we can work with them as well as them working with us, we 
might be able to get into the church records and further our research of 
our Termantani ancestry. I have given Scott the go-ahead to plan our 
reunion around the Columbus Day weekend to give us this opportunity and 
I hope that this will work well for our group. We will still hold our 
annual Saturday get-together like usual and the TI delegation will be 
with us as well. Those who can stay over till Monday can help also 
participate in the Columbus Day activities as well. I am personally 
looking forward to this very much and think we have been given a great 
opportunity.

As I have been telling everybody that talks to me about the reunion in Chicago and about Termini Imerese. I have said I have big plans.

Last night I sat down with a official from Termini Imerese. There are a few in Chicago for the Columbus parade. They will be participating in the parade with the sister city of Elk Grove Village. With big things to come.

With that being said for the 2018 reunion I am thinking to have it the Thursday's to Saturday the 4 the to the 6th of October. the weekend of Columbus Day on the 8th.  The reason for that is the Mayor of Termini Imerese and Many other officials will be in Chicago for the Parade. With meeting last night they would like to be part of our reunion. I have another meeting with the president of the organization for the sister city Elk Grove Village. Mr. Gullo. To have them part of our reunion next year. They have 2 floats that are in the Parade that who ever wants to stay until Monday for the parade can participate.

As one who has never participated in any of the activities of this group, I
will definitely plan to attend this. In addition, I will convene our clan for
our annual extended Amato/DiGiovanni family reunion in Chicago at that time. 

I lived in Italy for many years and visited Termini many times, taking family
members there. My wife and I have religiously followed all the emails in this
thread. It has enabled us to be in contact with other relatives we were
unaware of, some of whom live in our area. We will try to lure them to Chicago
as well for a grand reunion. 

Look forward to this event.

Note: My mother's grandmother was a DiGiovanni who packed up her kids and
sailed to Boston after her husband died in a storm while fishing off the coast
of Termini. Talk about a brave woman! I suspect whatever genes she had are
responsible for all the strong women in our extended family who came after
her. My father was born in Chicago and our family was raised there. Their five
kids resulted in a large number of grandkids and great grandkids still calling
Chicago home. Delighted that the reunion is there.

It's been awhile since I have attended the yearly gatherings.  I think this
is one I'd like to attend w/the Columbus attachment.  Also, I have an older
cousin who lives near Chicago that perhaps I could be able to see 

after many years of not seeing Chicago myself.

Added note:  Regarding the name of DiGiovanni this is my grandmother's
maiden name. She became a Spagnolo married in 1906 in Termini.  She arrived
in N.Y, w/my grandfather and 6 children, my mother being the oldest.  The
final destination Des Moines, Iowa.  The city where I was born.  Maybe I can
meet some DiGiovanni families since she was the only one who came to the
U.S. that was ever known.

As I have been telling everybody that talks to me about the reunion in 
Chicago and about Termini Imerese. I have said I have big plans.

Last night I sat down with a official from Termini Imerese. There are a 
few in Chicago for the Columbus parade. They will be participating in 
the parade with the sister city of Elk Grove Village. With big things to 
come.

With that being said for the 2018 reunion I am thinking to have it the 
Thursday's to Saturday the 4 the to the 6th of October. the weekend of

In the past we tried to help others in the who research in the database 
by submitting information about people in the database who left Termini 
Imerese and died or were married outside of Termini Imerese.? Several of 
you have submitted your information to be included in the database.? 
There are? about 80 entries in the database that now contain information 
regarding where the person died or married outside of Termini.? Thanks 
to those who submitted their information.

But since we did this in 2010, we have had many new subscribers to both 
the mailing list and the database and I think we need to get their 
information as well.


To submit your information, please follow these instructions carefully.

1.? These additions can only be for entries that are for people already 
found in the CERTIFICATE DATABASE.

2.? NO LIVING PERSON'S information can be allowed for privacy reasons.? 
Although it is not likely that this will happen often, there is still 
the possibility that someone born between 1900 and 1910 could still be

Having the Reunion to coincide with the visiting officials from Termini and with those folks of Elk Grove sounds like a good thing.  My only concern is that the time we have on Saturday for getting together and reviewing trees with each other is really important for many people to connect their trees and just to talk.  I would try to avoid planning too many other activities in the early morning on Saturday as that's when most of us spend the time reviewing each other's trees and making connections.  At our Buffalo meeting, many of us were pouring over trees from 9 AM  until 1 or 2 PM without stopping.  Then there were the die-hards of us that were still going at 4 PM and feeling like there was more to do!  We finally closed down at 4 PM but there were a few people's trees that I never got a chance to look at.  So those are just my thoughts for Saturday.

It certainly would be exciting to have the mayor of Termini there - and he should know about our group because when you think about it, we are the most active group concerned with the genealogical history of Termini in the United States - and for that matter - the World.  Kind of amazing when you think about it, not to discount the work the LDS Church did to film the Civil Records to begin with.

Dear Friends (and cousins),

In anticipation of the meeting in Chicago next year, I am hoping to see more activity on this site.  I am interested in comparing Y-chromosome haplotypes and mitochondrial chromosome haplotypes for those of us that have done 23andMe, or a few others.   I don't believe that Ancestry DNA gives out Y-chromosome information.  I did both 23andMe and Ancestry.  I'm also thinking about doing the National Geographic "Geno 2.0" as well, if they can provide information not found in the other two.  I am most interested in knowing the Y-chromosome haplogroup (haplotype) for other Corso families, but also the other paternal (Y-chromosome DNA) and maternal (mitochondrial, mtDNA) lines.

My Y-chromosome is R-M417, which is rather rare in Sicily (less than 5%).
1.  According to 23andMe and consistent with other information I have, we come from genealogical "Adam" (our ~9000th great grandfather) who lived in East Africa about 275,000 years ago (haplogroup A).  Due to genetic drift (mutations over time), other subgroups developed.
2.  Most decedents of modern non-Africans migrated out of Africa to the Arabian peninsula about 76,000 years ago (haplogroup F-M89).  Our ~2500th great grandfathers.
3. Then to South Asia (Indian sub-continent) about 53,000 years ago (haplogroup K-M9).  Our ~ 1800th great grandfathers.
4. Then to central Asia (northern India/Afghanistan area) about 35,000 years ago (haplogroup R-M207).  Our ~1200th great grandfathers.
5. Then to the middle east (Iraq, Israel, Turkey area) about 25,000 years ago (haplogroup R-M420).  Our ~800th great grandfathers.
6. Then passed north through the Caucasus mountains (the Caucasians) settling north to the Black Sea area of southern Russia and the Ukraine (haplogroup R-M512) from 25,000 to 12,000 years ago.  Our ~400th great grandfathers.
7. Around that same time, another subgroup (haplogroup R-M417) came to be, with most descendants now living in Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, middle east, central Asia and India.
8. I'm guessing at this point, that my line likely migrated to Norway about 1000 BC (my ~100th great grandfather), then to Normandy France by about 800 AD (my ~40th great grandfather).
9. Then sometime after 1066 AD was part of the Norman Invasion of Sicily.  My ~30th great grandfather.

I have my Termini line back to my 6th or 7th great grandfather, so I still have long way to go to verify the above story.

We may never know for sure, but a fascinating possibility.

To the best of my knowledge, Family Tree DNA is the best DNA company
to go to for Y-DNA testing. You want to test a minimum of 37 markers,
more if you can afford it. You may even want a Big Y test. If so, you
may possibly want to wait till the holiday sale. You also want to join
the forum, or read it at least. You don't have to purchase a test to
join the forum. So you can ask questions before you purchase.

You can join the Sicily Y-DNA project.
https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/sicily/about/background You can
save a little money maybe by joining the project first and ordering
through the project. You could even start your own Termini project, if
you wanted to.

My grandmother was from Termini. She had a brother, but I don't know
any of his descendants, so I can't do a Y-DNA test on my Palmisano
line. My grandfather was from Cappelle sul Tavo in Abruzzo. My father
did a YDNA test and he is J-M172. He doesn't have a single match in
Family Tree DNA's database.

On my mother's side (not Italian), her nephew did a Y-DNA test. He did
not get a single match to his own surname, but got several close
matches to a different surname. Autosomal DNA testing eventually
proved that my great-grandfather was not the son of my 2nd
great-grandmother's husband, but the son of a neighbor. So, always be
aware that Y-DNA testing can reveal surprising non-paternity events,
and if those events occurred in the last couple of generations,
families may have a hard time dealing with them. In our case, it had
little effect as my great-grandfather was raised in an orphanage and
died in 1937. The worst thing was that it destroyed 10 years of my
genealogical research, which meant a lot of time and money!

I ordered the Living DNA test for my husband, who is not a bit Italian (at
least I don't think so).  We don't have his results back yet.  However, I
know that this test covers quite extensively both Maternal and Paternal
lines.  Total disclosure:  my company, www.ancestorstuff.com, is an
affiliate of Living  DNA.  I plan to share with my customers when we get
these results returned.

Also, I did test myself with Ancestory DNA.  I have so many links to so many
other testers.  It confirmed stuff I already knew.  And, connected me with
my father's Austro-Hungarian side.  Very cool.

My sister tested with 23 and Me.  She had more information about her
Austro-Hungarian genes than I did.  Yet, she has less information about her
Sicilian line.  Apparently I am more Sicilian, Middle Eastern, Italian, etc.
than she is.  But then, she looks like our father, and I look like our
mother.

Pick a test and go for it!

I would never do a DNA test merely to get ethnicity results. They are
not very accurate. If you test at 3 different companies, you'll get 3
different results, and if you play with the ethnicity calculators at
Gedmatch, you'll get a few more. Ethnicity calculations started out as
a fun little freebee that you got with your real results - your list
of "cousins". Ancestry found they could sell lots of tests based on
ethnicity instead of on hard work triangulating DNA segments of
matches. They said most of their customers were too stupid (not how
they put it, but that's what it meant) to use a chromosome browser,
therefore they won't even provide one.
